i care about what we eat.I see food as many things: sustenance, identity, family, memories, comfort, stories, meditation, culture, connections, politics, power, work, abundance, impermanence, strength, joy. I cook mostly with my husband - for ourselves, for family, for friends, for community, and in defiance of times when it gets hard to stay on top of cooking in our hectic lives. I grow vegetables in the small raised bed we have in our backyard when the Minnesota summers allow. I meet new creatures - small and mighty and gentle and funny - in understanding where and how food comes to be. I read about food, and the people who cook and grow and cry and laugh and learn and mourn and celebrate with food. I find food that brings me comfort to get me through difficult times. I learn about my own cultures and identities through food. I witness the celebrations and moments in life that are marked by the presence or absence of food.I hold space for stories of food and foodways and foods that challenge our understanding of each other, especially from those of us whose narratives are hidden or absent by oppression, silence, or fear.
Food invites my five senses, my heart, my mind, and my will to be engaged and present. This site is an encouragement to myself to make visible some of my own narratives around food. |
